Kenya Rugby Union director of Women and Community rugby, Paulina Lanco speaks about the progress of women’s rugby in the country. Our interview with the Kenya Rugby Union director is courtesy of ragahouse.com.

KRU women’s 10s aside league which happens to be the first ever women’s league in the country, recently ended and Mwamba Women’s RFC were crowned as the champions.

There are only five women’s clubs in Kenya: Mwamba, KCB, Kenya Harlequin, Top Fry Nakuru and University side, USIU.

In June 2015, we also had Kenya Secondary schools sports Association sevens (KSSSA 7s) being held at Nyeri. This was the first time in the history of Kenyan Rugby we had secondary school girls take part in a sevens aside rugby tournament.

Kenya Lionesses recently won the Women’s Elgon cup, beating Uganda 12-11 on aggregate. With that in mind, we can see that Kenya Rugby Union is doing its best in matters concerning women’s rugby growth.

“Our intent is to grow in terms of the number of clubs, that remains a big priority for me. It has been an honor having five clubs. We are informed that there will be a sixth club joining us. That should be Comras.”

“Comras are currently in the processes of preparing their senior side. This means when we go to the sevens circuit, we expect to see six clubs instead of five. This shows progression and it is fantastic. ”

“My hope is that when we get to the next year’s league, we target to have a minimum of not less than eight clubs. We are not yet where we want to be. This is a great start but we still do have a lot of work ahead of us. ” Director Paula concluded.
