Nationwide match between Kiambu RFC and Embu RFC was not played during the weekend due to the new rules the Kenya Rugby Union has introduced.
Kiambu RFC who were hosting Embu had prepared themselves and both teams were at their NIBS college grounds in Ruiru for the match when Innocent Kimathi who was the match official from KRU walked in and made an agreed decision to call off the match.
According to the new rules, the match official permitted to officiate a match only if both teams are in the required uniformed kit and the hosting team provides an ambulance and a doctor in case of an emergency.
Kiambu in this case lacked a doctor and an ambulance necessitating the match official to award Embu with a walk over after also considering the proximity distance of the nearest health facility and a professional medic.
Kiambu RFC captain Charles Chege spoke to Shujaa Pride’s correspondent after the devastating walk over awarded to Embu, he said KRU should consider some of the financial constraints most upcoming clubs are going through especially the likes that do not have sponsors but simply depend on their hard-earned few coins.
“The new rules will simply mean that struggling clubs like us will not win any home match since we cannot afford to hire an ambulance leave alone a professional medic to be on the stand by as well. These rules will kill the development of rugby in Kenya,” said Charles Chege.
