The Kenya sevens technical bench made a number of changes from the last round (Cape Town 7s) which sees Robert Aringo, Frank Wanyama and Leonard Mugaisi replaced by Andrew Amonde, Humphrey Kayange and Donald Aluoch.
Benjamin Ayimba said that that the team they named yesterday was the best they could get.
Dennis Ombachi, who scored the winning try in last year’s Africa 7s, was not included in the squad and Coach Ayimba had this to say.
“Dennis had some commitments after the Olympics qualifiers so there are people in the squad who have trained more than him”
Former Kenya 7s captain, Humphrey Kayange was recalled to the squad that will travel to Sydney and Wellington.
“Humphrey Kayange was to get fit. Which tournament he was going to play was still a debate until we evaluated him right before Christmas. He is ready now to give it a try and we will see how far he goes in this,” Ayimba said.
Ayimba’s idea is to expose as many players as possible before the Rio 2016 Olympics take place hence a “big name” might be missing in the travelling squad to a HSBC World rugby 7s series circuit.
“I will be happy to take players to the World rugby sevens series. Everyone is fit and in fact it is a nightmare now. Augustine Lugonzo and Mugaisi are well it is just that Donald Aluoch had to have his chance.”
“You are going to see changes in the squad not because somebody is unfit or out of form but because we need to rotate as many players as possible this season. We need to expose as many players as possible.”
From playing for Egerton Wasps to Top Fry Nakuru and now being included in the Kenya 7s squad, Donald Aluoch is one player who has shown great improvement in his rugby career.
“Donald Aluoch came in as a development player and has proved himself beyond reasonable doubt that he is good enough to go out there. Anybody who raises his hand and is good enough has a fair chance to be called up.”
“There is nobody who has a certain call up for the Rio Olympics and that is why we are preparing,” Benjamin Concluded.
