The New Zealand men's sevens rugby team had disastrous start to their Olympics campaign with  Sonny Bill Williams picking a tournament-ending ankle injury in the shocking defeat to Japan.

In addition to losing to Japan in their first pool match, New Zealand will also miss the services of Joe Webber who also picked an injury in the same match.

The two stars have been ruled out of the Games after suffering injuries in the match.

Sonny Bill Williams suffered a partial achilles rupture when he took a crash ball into two defenders while his team mate Joe Webber suffered a shoulder injury and was driven off the pitch in a medi-cab.
