Kenya 7s being the only core team in the World Rugby sevens in this year’s Africa 7s, they are definitely the team to beat. Having qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics, South Africa will not feature in this year’s event.
Kenya 7s 50-5 Mauritius
The opening match of Africa 7s saw Shujaa battle it out with Mauritius at 11am East Africa Time. Willy Ambaka opened the floodgates for Shujaa in the third minute before Billy Odhiambo touched down a minute later. Captain Andrew Amonde sprinted to the try box with a minute to half time to put Kenya far beyond control.
Things went from Bad to worse for Mauritius in the second half. Speed star Collins Injera, debutant Jeff Oluoch, youngstar Frank “Animal” Wanyama and experienced fly half Biko Adema each scored a try to give Kenya a 50-5 win against their opponents.
Kenya 7s 27-0 Senegal 7s
Five tries and a conversion was all Shujaa needed to thrash Senegal 27-0 in their second pool match, a team they were facing for the first time. The match was one sided, Shujaa had the majority of possession and controlled most of the game. Collins Injera, Billy Odhiambo and Oscar Ayodi each scored a try. Newbies Frank Wanyama and Jeffrey Oluoch each scored a try to seal the 27-0 win against the Senegalese.
Kenya 7s 46-0 Madagascar
Ayimba’s boys went into their last pool match against Madagascar all fired up. Frank Wanyama opened the score board for Kenya before his club mate Eden Agero scored the second. Vice captain Collins Injera would later extend Kenya’s lead to 15-0 and a successful conversion would follow. Kenya went into the break with a 17-0 lead against Madagascar.
Leonard Mugaisi, Frank Wanyama, Willy Ambaka and Collins Injera each chronologically went over the white wash once in the second half. The day belonged to Kenya as Dennis Ombachi’s try was the last notable action of the match. Kenya easily registered their third straight win against Madagascar to top the pool.
